Jamel Rust is a junior consultant at ServiceNow partner The Process Play. He transitioned from human resources (HR) to tech, drawn by ServiceNow’s industry-leading technology and supportive community. He’s now working toward his Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification while balancing project work and family life. His passion for technology and commitment to learning highlight the power of resilience and a growth mindset. Jamel's next goal? A career pivot fueled by passion and persistence

Jamel began his career in HR but felt something was missing. Hearing others' aspirations sparked his passion for technology and a drive to learn, inspiring a bold career change. Jamel first discovered ServiceNow through tech influencer forums, and it wasn’t long before he came across ServiceNow’s Alt Shift Life film, which features stories of people from diverse backgrounds. Watching the film, he saw people who looked like him, spoke like him, and came from similar backgrounds. It was a powerful moment of recognition, and he knew he had to be part of it. 

 

Embracing challenges and growth

Transitioning careers wasn’t easy, but Jamel embraced the challenge. Balancing late-night study sessions with work and family responsibilities was no small feat, but he knew he was setting a powerful example for his children. Jamel credits his wife for keeping him motivated. He admits the learning curve can be demanding but sees each day as an opportunity to grow. He has found immense support within the ServiceNow community, and he relies heavily on the user-friendly ServiceNow learning experience and readily available resources.

Jamel is passionate about building a visible tech community in the UK for individuals like himself who want to transition into the industry from non-technical backgrounds. Jamel believes that with the right mindset, determination, and support, a career transition is not only possible but also enjoyable and rewarding. As he continues to thrive within the ServiceNow ecosystem, his ambitions have also evolved—he has now set his sights on a presales position, where he can blend his technical expertise with his strong people skills.
